Pulley

A pulley is a very useful tool. It is a wheel that sits on an axle or a shaft.

A rope, cable, or belt passes over the wheel. This wheel often has a groove to keep the rope in place. Pulleys can change the direction of a pull. They can also move power from one spinning shaft to another.

This makes them a key part of many machines. They help us move things that would otherwise be too heavy to lift.

There are a few different ways a pulley works. A fixed pulley stays in one place on a structure. It only changes the direction of your pull. A movable pulley has an axle that moves with the load.

When you join these together, you get a system called a block and tackle. This uses a single rope threaded through several pulleys. The more parts of the rope that support the moving block, the easier the load is to lift. This helpful effect is called mechanical advantage. It means you use less force to move a heavy weight.

People have used pulleys for thousands of years. The earliest evidence comes from Ancient Egypt during the Twelfth Dynasty.

This was between 1991 and 1802 BC. Pulleys were also used in Mesopotamia in the early 2nd millennium BC. Later, a man named Hero of Alexandria lived in Roman Egypt around 10 to 70 AD. He named the pulley as one of six simple machines. He showed how they could be used to lift weights.

History tells us about the power of these tools. A famous thinker named Archimedes once showed how great they are. He used a system of compound pulleys to pull a full ship. He pulled it as if it were just gliding through the water.

Different pulley setups have special names based on how they are rigged. A gun tackle has a mechanical advantage of two. A luff tackle has an advantage of three. Other setups like the double, gyn, and threefold purchase offer even more help.

You can see pulleys working in many modern machines today. Some use a belt and pulley system to move power.

This is like a chain drive but uses a belt instead. Some pulleys are shaped like a crown to keep the belt centered. You might find these in a vacuum cleaner or a bandsaw.

Other machines use cone pulleys or step pulleys to change speeds. These work much like the gears in a car transmission. They allow a machine to run at different speeds as needed.
