A rope, cable, or belt goes around the wheel. This tool can change the direction of a pull. It can also move power from one part to another.

Pulleys have been used for a very long time. People in Ancient Egypt used them long ago.

You can join many pulleys together to make a block and tackle. This is a set of wheels used to lift heavy loads. A block and tackle makes lifting much easier. It gives you a mechanical advantage. This means you use less force to move a heavy weight. The more parts of the rope that hold the load, the easier it is to lift.

Pulleys also work in belt drives. These use belts to move power between spinning rods. Some pulleys have a special shape to keep the belt in place. This is called a crowned pulley. This helps the belt stay centered as it moves.
