Block and tackle

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A block and tackle is a tool used to lift heavy loads. It uses a system of two or more pulleys. A pulley is a wheel that a rope runs around.

To make this tool, you use two blocks. A block is a frame that holds the pulleys. One block stays fixed in one place. The other block moves up and down with the heavy load.

You thread a single rope through these pulleys. This way of threading the rope is called reeving. This system gives you a mechanical advantage. This means the rope makes the load feel much lighter.

The amount of help you get depends on the rope. The mechanical advantage is equal to the number of rope parts holding the load. For example, a double tackle has four rope parts. This makes a 100 N load feel like only 25 N.

You must pull more rope to lift a load higher. If you want to lift a load 1 metre, you might pull 6 metres of rope. Friction can also make the work harder. Friction is the rubbing between parts that slows things down.
