It uses a horizontal cylinder called a barrel. You turn a crank or a belt to make the barrel spin. A rope or cable wraps around the ends. This pulls a weight at the other end. A Greek scientist named Archimedes invented it.

People have used windlasses for a long time. In the Middle Ages, workers used them to build churches. Miners used them to pull heavy buckets up from shafts. They used them until the shafts went below 40 metres deep. After that, they used a different tool called a whip.

There is a special kind called a differential windlass. This is also called a Chinese windlass. It has two drums of different sizes. The rope winds off one drum and onto the other. This way, a person can lift very large weights easily.

A Spanish windlass is different. It uses a stick to twist a rope. This makes the rope very tight. It can pull heavy objects like pipes or posts. It can even pull cars or cattle out of mud.
