A drawbridge is a moving bridge.

It was often used at the entrance to a castle. These castles were often surrounded by a moat. A moat is a deep ditch filled with water.

People use the bridge to walk into the castle. When the bridge is down, it lets people cross the moat. But the bridge can be raised quickly from the inside. This stops enemies from coming in. When it is up, it sits against the gate. This makes the gate even harder to get through.

To lift the bridge, people use ropes or chains. These are tied to a windlass. A windlass is a machine that helps pull things. Some bridges use a bascule arrangement. This means they use heavy weights to help lift the bridge. These weights make the heavy wood easier to move. Some bridges also use gaffs. These are lifting arms that help pull the bridge up.

Some bridges also pivot on a center point. These are called turning bridges. They could sink into a pit to stay out of the way.
