A gate can move up or down. Some gates use a hand and a chain. Other gates use electric power. One type is a flap sluice. This gate works on its own. It uses water pressure to move.

Another type is a fan gate. A Dutch engineer made it in 1808. It uses a special chamber to work. Water fills the chamber to move the gate. This can help flood certain areas on purpose. Sluices can also move heavy logs. In the United States, people used them in mountains. They moved logs down steep hills. Sometimes, workers added ice to the sluice. This made the logs slide more easily. People use different names for these tools. In Guyana, people call them kokers. In Sri Lanka, they are called Horovuwa.
