A sluice is a very useful water channel. It contains a movable gate to manage water flow. This tool helps people control how much water moves. It also helps them manage the water level.

Sluices are a type of lock. They can be used to move logs down steep hills. They can also send water toward a water mill. People use many different names for these tools. In Guyana, they are called kokers. In Sri Lanka, the Sinhala people call them Horovuwa. In the Somerset Levels, they are called clyse or clyce.

Most sluices work by moving a gate up or down. A mechanism usually drives this movement. Some gates are pulled by a hand or a chain. Others use a worm drive or a rack-and-pinion drive. Some even use electric or hydraulic power.

A flap sluice is a special kind. It works automatically without any help. It uses water pressure to move. When the pressure is high on one side, the gate stays closed. If the pressure changes, the gate can open.

One famous type is the fan gate. A Dutch hydraulic engineer invented it in 1808. He was the Inspector-General for Waterstaat in the Kingdom of Holland.

This gate has a special chamber inside it. Water can fill this chamber to change the pressure. This helps the gate open using only water pressure. In the past, this was used to flood certain areas. One example was the Hollandic Water Line. You can still find these gates in places like Gouda.

There are many ways to design these gates. A vertical rising sluice gate is a plate that slides up. A radial sluice gate uses a part of a curved cylinder. Some gates even use a counterweight to help them move.

In the mountains of the United States, people used logging sluices. These moved logs from steep hills to sawmill ponds. In the nineteenth century, this was often a winter job. Workers sometimes added water to create slippery ice. This helped the heavy logs slide more easily.

Sluices are part of a large world of water tools. They are used in hydraulic engineering to control rivers and canals. You might know a mill race or a flume. These are also ways to channel water.

Even names can tell a story about sluices. In the Netherlands, the name Zijlstra refers to someone living near a sluice. The name Van der Sluijs also comes from the word for sluice. These tools help us live alongside moving water every day.
