Most locks are called pound locks. A pound lock has a watertight chamber. This chamber connects two parts of a canal. It has large gates at each end. These gates close tight to keep water in.

If a boat travels downstream, it goes down. First, the boat enters the lock. The gates close behind it. Then, water drains out of the chamber. The boat sinks lower with the water. When the levels match, the gates open. The boat moves out.

If a boat goes upstream, it goes up. The boat enters the lock and the gates close. Then, water flows in from upstream. This fills the chamber and lifts the boat. Once the boat is high enough, the gates open.

This whole way of moving can take 10 to 20 minutes. In China, people used pound locks during the Song dynasty. This was a ruling family from 960 to 1279 CE. A man named Qiao Weiyue helped make these locks better.
