A lock helps boats move on hills.

It is like a small room in the water. This room has gates at each end.

When a boat goes up, it enters the room. The gates close tight. Then, water flows in to fill the room.

The rising water lifts the boat up.

When a boat goes down, it is different. The room is filled first. The boat moves in and the gates close. Then, water flows out of the room. The boat sinks lower with the water.

This helps boats cross land that is not flat. It makes rivers easier to use. It can take ten to twenty minutes.
