Gutters help keep a building safe. They stop water from hitting the walls. Water on walls can cause dampness. It can also cause mold to grow. Gutters also guide water away from the base of the building. This protects the foundations.

There are many ways to make gutters. Some are made of metal like copper or zinc. Others use UPVC, which is a type of plastic. People also use aluminum, steel, and even bamboo. Long ago, people used stone or wood. Some gutters even used lead to line them.

Sometimes, leaves or bits of the roof get stuck. This is called a clog. A clogged gutter can cause water to back up. This can let water into the building. Some people use gutter guards to stop this. These are screens that let water in but keep debris out.
