The first cranes were very simple. A device called a shaduf was used in Mesopotamia. It helped move water for farming. Later, Greeks built cranes for stone buildings. These used men or animals for power. The Romans made even better cranes. They used a treadwheel to lift heavy loads. A treadwheel is a large wooden wheel. Men would walk inside it to turn the wheel. This made the crane much stronger.
