People use them to dig holes or trenches. They also help knock down old houses.

Most excavators have three main parts. First is the undercarriage. This part has tracks or wheels to move. Second is the house. The house sits on the undercarriage. It holds the engine and the cab. The cab is where the driver sits. Third is the arm. The arm has three parts. These are the boom, the stick, and the bucket.

The machine uses hydraulic fluid to move. Hydraulic fluid is a special oil. This oil is kept at high pressure. It moves the cylinders to make the arm work. The arm can move up and down. It can also pull the bucket toward the machine.

Some excavators are very small. We call these mini excavators. Other machines are huge. The CAT 6090 is a very large model. It can weigh more than 600 tonnes. It has a bucket that holds 52.0 cubic meters of dirt.
