A pulley is a mechanical device consisting of a wheel mounted on an axle or shaft.

A taut cable, rope, belt, or chain passes over this wheel to change direction or transfer power. Many pulleys feature grooves between flanges around their circumference to keep the drive element in place. These devices are fundamental to mechanics because they allow for the movement of heavy loads and the transmission of energy between rotating shafts. By arranging pulleys in specific ways, engineers can create systems that make work much easier.

To understand how a pulley works, we must look at the relationship between force and load. In a simple fixed pulley, the device only changes the direction of the force applied to the rope. However, when you combine pulleys, you create a system called a block and tackle. A block is a set of pulleys assembled so each wheel rotates independently. A block and tackle uses two blocks connected by a single continuous rope. One block is attached to a fixed mounting point, while the other is attached to the moving load.

The most important concept in pulley systems is mechanical advantage, or MA. This is the factor by which a system reduces the input force needed to move a load. In an ideal system, we assume the pulleys are weightless and there is no energy loss from friction. The mechanical advantage is equal to the number of rope sections that support the moving block. For example, if there are four sections of rope supporting a load, the input force required is only one-fourth of the total weight.

This allows a person to lift a massive weight with much less effort.

There are several distinct types of pulley configurations used in engineering. A fixed pulley is mounted to a supporting structure and stays in one place. A movable pulley has an axle located within a movable block, and a single movable pulley provides a mechanical advantage of two. Compound pulleys combine these types to form the block and tackle. Different rigging methods result in specific names and advantages. A gun tackle provides a mechanical advantage of two. A luff tackle increases this to three. Other systems include the double tackle, gyn tackle, and the threefold purchase, which offer even higher levels of assistance.

Humanity has utilized the power of pulleys for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of their use dates back to the Twelfth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, between 1991 and 1802 BC. Pulleys were also used in Mesopotamia during the early 2nd millennium BC. Later, in Roman Egypt, Hero of Alexandria identified the pulley as one of six simple machines used to lift weights.

History even records the incredible strength of these systems. The thinker Archimedes reportedly used compound pulleys to pull a fully laden ship toward him as if it were gliding through water.

Beyond lifting, pulleys are essential for power transmission through belt-and-pulley systems. In these setups, two or more pulleys share a common belt to move torque and speed across axles.

If the pulleys have different diameters, they create a mechanical advantage similar to how gears work. Some pulleys, called crowned pulleys, are slightly convex to keep a flat belt centered. You can find these in modern tools like vacuum cleaners, belt sanders, and bandsaws.

To prevent slipping or wear, engineers sometimes use lagging, which is a textured coating applied to the pulley shell to improve friction.

Modern technology uses advanced versions of these pulleys to manage speed and power. Cone pulleys and step pulleys allow a system to provide multiple drive ratios.

This is very similar to how a transmission in a vehicle shifts through different gears. For instance, V-belt step pulleys are commonly used in drill presses to change the speed of the spindle. Whether used in a massive oil derrick or a small household appliance, the pulley remains a vital connection in the world of mechanical systems.
