Wheel

technology Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 3 Next article →

A wheel is a rotating component that is typically circular in shape. It is designed to turn on an axle, which is a central shaft or rod. Together, the wheel and axle form one of the six simple machines. This combination is vital because it allows heavy objects to be moved with much less effort. Wheels help facilitate transportation, support large loads, and allow machines to perform work. You can find wheels in many different tools, such as a ship's wheel, a steering wheel, or a potter's wheel.

The primary function of a wheel is to reduce friction. Friction is the resistance encountered when one surface moves over another. When you drag a heavy object, the entire surface rubs against the ground. A wheel changes this by facilitating motion through rolling. This process moves the frictional work away from the ground and into the bearings. A bearing is the part that allows the wheel to turn smoothly on the axle. In the simplest versions, a plain bearing is just a round hole through which the axle passes.

For a wheel to rotate, a specific force must be applied to it. This force is known as torque, which is a moment applied about the wheel's axis. This torque can be provided by gravity or by another external force. Once the torque is applied, the wheel rotates around its center point. This motion allows for the efficient transfer of energy. By using wheels, the sliding distance required for movement is greatly reduced. This makes the work required to move an object much lower than if it were simply dragged.

Historians face many challenges when trying to pinpoint the exact invention of the wheel. The oldest hints are often uncertain or do not prove that real wheeled transport existed. Some evidence suggests that solid wooden disk wheels appeared during the late Neolithic period. This was a time of major technological shifts leading into the Bronze Age. The potter's wheel was invented during the Copper Age, between 4500 and 3300 BCE. One of the oldest surviving wooden wheels is the Ljubljana Marshes Wheel. This wheel and its axle date to approximately 3340–3030 BCE.

Wheels have evolved through several distinct stages and designs. The earliest wheels were solid wooden disks, often made from horizontal slices of tree trunks. However, these were often inferior to wheels made from longitudinal boards. A major advancement was the invention of the spoked wheel. Spokes are the rods that connect the central hub to the outer rim. These wheels are much lighter and faster than solid disks. The Sintashta culture used spoked wheels around 2000 BCE. Later, Celtic chariots added an iron rim to the wheel during the 1st millennium BCE.

Different cultures developed wheels in unique ways across the globe. In China, wheel tracks have been found at Pingliangtai dating to 2200 BCE. In the Americas, archaeologists have found small wheeled artifacts used as children's toys. These items date back to approximately 1500 BCE in Mesoamerica. However, the wheel was never used for practical transportation in Mesoamerica before the 16th century. One reason may be the lack of large domesticated animals to pull them. While the llama was domesticated, it was a pack animal and not suited for pulling heavy carts.

Modern technology has expanded the uses of the wheel far beyond simple carts. In the 1870s, inventors created wire-spoked wheels and pneumatic tires. A pneumatic tire is a tire filled with compressed air. These tires greatly reduce rolling resistance and improve comfort during travel. Today, many vehicles use cast or forged alloy wheels. The concept of the wheel also connects to many complex mechanical systems. Modern descendants of the wheel include propellers, jet engines, and turbines. Even the flywheel, which stores rotational energy, is a direct relative of the original wheel.
