Wheel

technology Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 3 Next article →

A wheel is a round part that turns on a rod called an axle. This pair is known as a wheel and axle. It is one of the six simple machines. Wheels help us move heavy objects with much less effort. They also support big loads and help machines do work. You can find wheels in many things, like a steering wheel or a potter's wheel.

Wheels work by reducing friction. Friction is the force that happens when two things rub together. Instead of dragging a heavy object across the ground, the wheel rolls. This rolling motion makes it much easier to move. For a wheel to turn, a force must be applied to it. This force can come from gravity or another push. The wheel turns around its center point, which is called an axis.

Finding the exact start of the wheel is hard for historians. The oldest hints are not always clear. Some solid wooden disk wheels date back to the late Neolithic period. This was a time when people were starting to use farming and pottery. The potter's wheel was invented during the Copper Age, between 4500 and 3300 BCE. The Ljubljana Marshes Wheel is one of the oldest wooden wheels ever found. It was made around 3340 to 3030 BCE.

Different cultures made many kinds of wheels over time. The spoked wheel was a big invention. Spokes are the thin rods that connect the center to the edge. These wheels were lighter and faster than solid ones. The Sintashta culture used spoked wheels around 2000 BCE. In China, wheel tracks were found at a site called Pingliangtai near 2200 BCE. In Britain, a large wooden wheel was found at Must Farm. This wheel was used by people between 1100 and 800 BCE.

Wheels are part of many things you see every day. Modern cars often use pneumatic tires, which are tires filled with air. These tires help make a ride feel smooth. You might also see wheels on a tricycle or a bicycle. Even big machines like jet engines and turbines use the idea of a wheel. Some wheels are used for ceremony, while others are for work. The wheel has changed how humans move and build the world.
