A belt is a loop of flexible material.

It links two or more spinning shafts together. Most belts run over pulleys, which are wheels that the belt grips. Belts can move things, like a conveyor belt that carries loads between two points.

Belts can also change how fast something spins. You can use different sized pulleys to make a machine go faster or slower. If you cross the belt between two pulleys, it will make the second shaft spin in the opposite direction.

Long ago, many belts were made of leather.

In the 19th century, flat belts helped run big factories. After World War I, there was a shortage of leather. People even used leather belts to make shoes. Today, most belts are made of rubber or synthetic polymers. Many machines now use V-belts. These belts have a V shape. This shape helps them grip the pulley better so they do not slip.

This makes them very useful for modern machines.
