A conveyor belt is a loop of material. It moves items from one place to another.

Most systems use two or more pulleys. A pulley is a wheel that the belt wraps around. One pulley is called the drive pulley. It has a motor that makes it turn. This turns the whole belt. The other wheel is the idler pulley. It does not have a motor. It just helps the belt stay in place.

Belts can be many shapes. A troughed belt is curved like a bowl. This helps keep loose things like grain inside. A pipe conveyor rolls the belt into a tube. This lets it go around sharp turns. Some use two belts to hold items tight. This is called a sandwich belt. It can even move things straight up a wall!

Belts are very strong. Many have a carcass. This is a middle layer that gives the belt strength. It can be made of steel or tough fabric. Some belts use aramid. Aramid is a strong fiber that helps save power. These belts work in many places. You see them in factories, at airports, and even at grocery stores.
