An anchor is a tool used to keep a vessel in one place.

It stops a boat from drifting away because of wind or water currents. Most anchors are made of metal and are used to secure a craft to the bed of a body of water.

Some anchors are used only for a short time, while others are permanent. Permanent anchors stay in one spot to create a mooring. A special service is usually needed to move or fix these permanent anchors.

Anchors work in a few different ways to stay in place. They can work by "hooking" into the seabed or by using heavy weight.

Some large anchors use their weight to stay put. Other anchors for smaller boats have metal flukes, which are flat parts that hook onto rocks or bury into soft ground.

The weight of the anchor chain is also very important for holding power. Sometimes the chain can even weigh more than the anchor itself. The vessel stays connected to the anchor by a rode, which is a rope or a chain.

People have used anchors for a very long time. The earliest anchors were likely just heavy rocks.

Scientists have found rock anchors that date back to the Bronze Age. In the past, Māori people used hollowed stones tied with flax ropes for their canoes.

As time went on, people made many different shapes and sizes of metal anchors. These designs changed to fit different types of water and different kinds of ships.

Finding the right spot to anchor is a very important job. Sailors look for good holding ground, which is the area of the sea floor.

Hard sand is good holding ground because it holds well. However, shell does not hold an anchor very well. Sailors also check the depth of the water and make sure there is room for the boat to swing.

They must also consider the wind and the current when they choose a place. If the ground is poor, the weight of the anchor and chain becomes even more vital.

There are many ways to use anchors to help a ship move or stay steady. A kedge anchor is a lighter anchor used to help turn a ship or pull it off a sandbank.

Sailors can also use two anchors at once to make a stronger mooring. This is called a forked moor if they are set at an angle. When it is time to leave, the crew must pull the anchor up. When the anchor is no longer resting on the bottom, it is called aweigh.
