Most reels attach to a fishing rod. Some people even use them on bows for bowfishing.

People first made reels in China. Old paintings from the year 1195 show a man using one.

These early reels were like small wheels. They were likely based on winches used to lift heavy things.

There are two main ways a reel works. The first is the rotary-spool design. In this type, the spool turns to wind the line. One kind is the multiplier reel. It uses gears to make the spool spin very fast.

This helps you pull the line in quickly.

The second way is the fixed-spool design. The spool does not move. Instead, a separate part moves around the spool to wrap the line. This design helps keep the line from tangling.
