Casting is how fishers throw gear into the water.

Most fishers use a long, bendy rod. They swing the rod forward very fast. This makes the rod bend backward. Then the rod snaps forward to hurl the line.

There are many ways to cast. A sidearm cast is like a tennis stroke. An overhead cast uses a big swing to go far. Some fishers use a roll cast to skim the water. Fly fishers use special rods. They swing the line in circles to build power. This makes the line move like a wave. It carries a tiny fly to the fish.

Fishers pick rods for the job. Light rods work for small fish like trout. Heavy rods work for big, strong fish. Saltwater fishers use very heavy gear. They use their whole body to cast far.

Casting is also a sport. People compete in tournaments. They try to be accurate or throw very far. They use plastic weights instead of real hooks. The International Casting Sport Federation helps run these contests. It has members in 31 countries.
