Sunlight helps life grow in the ocean. The top layer is called the photic zone. This is the part where light can reach. In this zone, tiny plants called phytoplankton use light. They also use water and nutrients to make food. This process is called photosynthesis.

These plants give off half of the oxygen we breathe. Most ocean animals live in this bright, food-rich area. Below this, the water becomes dark and cold.

Moving water in the ocean is called a current. Currents move heat, gases, and even pollutants around the world. Wind and tides help move these currents. The ocean also helps control our weather and climate. It acts like a huge storage for heat.
