This means they build stories using words and themes. Ben Jonson was the first to use this specific name in 1605. At first, he used it to mean a mere tradesman. He called himself a poet instead of a playwright.

Writing plays has a very long history. The Ancient Greeks wrote some of the earliest surviving plays. They held big competitions in Athens during the 5th century BC. These contests were part of festivals for Dionysos.

Writers like Aeschylus and Sophocles created forms we still use today. In India, a writer named Śudraka wrote plays around the second century BC. In China, performers from the 6th century BC also created their own shows. These people were like playwrights because they invented their own acts. Playwriting is a global tradition that connects many different cultures.

Many famous writers have shaped how we see drama. William Shakespeare is one of the most famous names in the world. His plays are performed more often than any others. They have even been translated into every major living language.

In the 17th century, new rules called neoclassicism became popular in France. These rules said a play should stay in one place. It should also take place within 24 hours. Some writers, like Aphra Behn, became the first professional women playwrights. Others, like Hans Sachs, wrote nearly 200 different works.

Playwriting involves many different parts to make a story work. A thinker named Aristotle wrote about these parts in his book, Poetics. He said a play needs a plot and characters. It also needs music, thought, and spectacle.

A character might have a "tragic flaw" which is a mistake in judgment. This mistake can create the conflict that drives the story forward. Some writers use a "French scene" to organize their work. This is when a scene changes because characters enter or leave. These tools help builders of stories create something meaningful.

Being a playwright today can be a very hard job. Many writers must work other jobs to pay their bills. Some playwrights even become filmmakers to use their skills.

Agatha Christie wrote a mystery play called The Mousetrap. It is the longest-running show in the world. It reached its 29,500th performance in February 2024. Today, special programs help new writers find their voices. Some groups, called collectives, work together to get plays onto the stage. These programs ensure that new stories continue to be told.
