A person who writes these stories is called a playwright. They write a script, which is the written text for the actors. This script often starts with a list of characters called a dramatis personae.

Plays are meant to be performed live on a stage. They can happen in big places like Broadway in New York City. They also happen in schools or small community theaters. Some people like to read plays like books. However, most plays are designed to be seen by an audience.

There are many different styles of plays to enjoy. Comedies are funny and use witty dialogue to make people laugh. Some comedies, called farces, use silly and exaggerated situations. Satire is another type of comedy that makes points about society. Tragedies are the opposite because they deal with sad themes like death.

In a tragedy, a main character might have a flaw that leads to a downfall. Some plays are even historical and focus on real events from the past. These different styles help tell many different kinds of human stories.

Musicals are a very lively form of theatre. In a musical, actors use songs and dance to move the story along. These shows often have very detailed sets and beautiful costumes. The first indigenous American musical was called "The Disappointment." It premiered in Philadelphia in 1767. Later, during the Victorian era, modern musical theatre became very popular. By the 1920s, composers could write every song for a specific play. Today, some musicals are based on famous movies or novels.

Some theatre styles are more experimental and unusual. The Theatre of Cruelty began in the 1940s with Antonin Artaud. He believed that the body could express things that words cannot. He wanted to use movement to show deep feelings and suffering. Another style is the Theatre of the Absurd. This style uses strange or contradictory actions to ask big questions. It often makes the audience think deeply about the human condition. These styles show how much theatre can change over time.

Understanding how a play is built helps us follow the story. Most plays are divided into large parts called acts. These acts are further split into smaller sections called scenes. Each scene usually takes place in a specific location. A script also includes stage directions to help the actors. These directions tell them when to enter or exit the stage. They might also say if there should be a sound like thunder.
