These stories are among the greatest in the English language. People still perform them all over the world today. His plays have been translated into every major living language. Scholars often group them into three main types. These are tragedies, comedies, and histories. Some people also call his later comedies "romances." Other plays are called "problem plays" because they are hard to categorize.

Shakespeare’s plays use many different writing styles. He often used iambic pentameter, which is a rhythm with a steady beat. Many characters speak in blank verse, which is a type of poetry. To end a scene, he often used a rhyming couplet. A couplet is two lines that rhyme together. This helps the audience feel that a scene is finished. He also used soliloquies to show a character's inner thoughts. This is when a character speaks their feelings out loud to the audience.

Shakespeare learned a lot about drama in school. He studied classical ideas from writers like Plautus and Terence. Before his time, many plays were "morality plays." These plays used symbolic characters to teach lessons about being good or evil. Other plays were academic and were often performed in Latin. Shakespeare helped create a new style of drama. He mixed the energy of morality plays with the complex ideas of classical theory. This helped him explore what it means to be human.

In the late 1500s, London had many new playhouses.

Most public theatres were three stories high. They were built around an open space in the middle. The stage was a platform that jutted out into the crowd. The audience sat in galleries that faced inward. Some theatres, like the Globe, were made of timber and had thatched roofs. The Globe actually burned down in June 1613. It was later rebuilt with a stronger tile roof. Another theatre, the Blackfriars, was smaller and had a roof.

Shakespeare's career changed as the tastes of the audience changed. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, his plays reached many different people. He wrote for both wealthy people and those who could not read. Later, during the reign of King James, his work became different. He wrote darker tragedies and even some tragicomedies. He sometimes worked with other writers, like John Fletcher. His plays always used humor, even in his sad tragedies. This helped his stories connect with people in many different ways.
