Many people call him the "prince of Comedy." He lived a very long time ago, perhaps between 550 and 460 BC. He is often credited with starting a special type of funny plays. These were called the Doric or Sicilian comedic form. He wrote between thirty-five and fifty-two comedies in his life. Most of these plays are lost today. We only have small pieces of them left. These pieces come from other old books and writings.

His plays used many different ways to make people laugh. Some were character comedies about how people act. Others were mythological travesties. This means he took famous myths and made them silly. For example, he wrote a play called "The Marriage of Hebe." In it, the hero Heracles was shown as a glutton. He also wrote "Odysseus the Deserter." This play made the hero Odysseus look unheroic for laughs. He also wrote a play called "The Country-Dweller." This one was a funny look at life in the country.

We do not know exactly where he was born. Some say he was from Syracuse. Others say he was from a city called Krastos. One writer says he was born in Astypalea. His father was a famous doctor named Helothales. The family moved to Sicily when Epicharmus was a baby. Later, he lived in Syracuse and worked for leaders named Gelo and Hiero I.
