He is often called "The Father of Comedy" or "the Prince of Ancient Comedy." Most of his surviving work belongs to a style called Old Comedy. This type of drama was very bold and used many jokes. His plays were important because they showed what life was like in ancient Athens. People still study his work to understand that time in history.

Making a play was a big job that required many steps. Aristophanes often served as the director, which was called a *didaskalos*. This word means "teacher" because he had to train the chorus. The chorus was a group of performers that was very important to the play. A wealthy citizen called a *choregus* paid for the chorus and helped the production.

These plays were performed at huge religious festivals in Athens. The most famous festivals were the City Dionysia and the Lenaia. The Theatre of Dionysus was a massive place that held at least 10,000 people.

Aristophanes lived during a time of big changes in Greece. He began writing when Athens was a strong power. His first play, *The Banqueters*, was performed when the Peloponnesian War was in its fourth year. He won second prize at the City Dionysia in 427 BC with that play. Later, he won first prize with *The Babylonians*. By the time he wrote his last play, around 386 BC, the war was over. Athens had changed from a political center to an intellectual center.

His plays used many funny but sharp tools to tell stories. He used wordplay and silly ideas to make people laugh. He also used political satire, which means making fun of leaders and laws. He wrote about real people like the leader Cleon and the philosopher Socrates. Some of his jokes were so strong that they caused trouble. A leader named Cleon called his play *The Babylonians* a slander against the city. Even though he faced hard times, Aristophanes continued to write many successful plays.
