Menander was a famous Greek playwright from ancient Athens.

He was the most well-known writer of a style called New Comedy. Unlike older funny plays, his stories felt very realistic. They often focused on the emotions and daily lives of regular people. Most of his plays featured two lovers and a helpful servant. These stories usually ended with a wedding or a happy event. Because his work was so clever, he was highly admired in the ancient world.

Writing a comedy followed a specific way of working.

Menander used keen observations of life to build his plots. He often included moral maxims, which are short sentences that teach a lesson. These sayings became very famous and were even used in schools. One such saying is, "The property of friends is common." Another famous line is, "Whom the gods love die young." He even wrote a play called Dyskolos, which means "The Grouch."

Menander lived around 342 BC and died about 290 BC.

He came from a wealthy family in Athens. His father was named Diopeithes. Menander was a very successful writer during his life. He won the prize at the Lenaia festival eight times. He wrote a total of 108 comedies. Even though he was very popular, he lived a quiet life. He preferred his own villa in the Piraeus over a royal court.

For a long time, people thought his plays were lost forever.

Most of his work only survived as tiny fragments. These scraps were often found on papyrus in Egyptian tombs. In 1907, the discovery of the Cairo Codex changed everything. Later, in 1959, experts found the play Dyskolos almost intact. This was a huge moment for historians. In 2003, a special manuscript called a palimpsest was found. It contained parts of the play Dyskolos and another piece called Titthe.

Menander's influence reached far beyond ancient Greece.

Roman writers like Terence and Plautus used his plays as models. They wrote their own stories based on his ideas. His famous words even traveled through time. For example, Julius Caesar reportedly used a quote from Menander. The phrase was "Let the die be cast." This was a way of saying one should take a big risk. His ideas about friendship and life still connect to us today.
