He is best known for writing six comedies. These funny plays were based on original Greek stories. All six of his plays have survived completely to this day. His work was so highly valued that it became a standard part of school lessons. For many centuries, students in the Western Roman Empire studied his writing. Even into the 19th century, his plays remained a central part of European education.

Shows happened during four annual festivals throughout the year. These included the Ludi Romani in September and the Ludi Megalenses in April. Because the Roman calendar was different, April shows often actually happened in January. There were no permanent stone theaters in Rome during his time. Instead, actors used temporary wooden stages built just for the occasion. These stages were small and held fewer than 2,000 people. Admission was free for almost everyone in the city.

Many people believe his life was quite remarkable.

Ancient stories say Terence was born in Carthage. He was brought to Rome as a slave in a senator's house. His talent and good looks helped him gain an education. Eventually, his patron gave him his freedom. He even took the name Terentius from his former master. Some scholars think these stories might just be guesses by later writers. However, the idea of his journey from slave to famous writer is very famous.

We know many specific details about his plays from production notices called didascaliae.

These notes tell us who performed the plays. They also list the musicians who played along. For example, a man named Flaccus provided music for his shows. His play Eunuchus was a massive success in Rome. It earned 8,000 nummi, which was a huge amount of money. Some experts believe the actual value was even higher at 32,000 sesterces.
