A monologue is a special kind of speech. It is spoken by just one character.

This person might share their private thoughts out loud. They might also talk to another character. Sometimes, they speak directly to the audience. Monologues appear in many places. You can find them in plays and films. They are also used in poetry and stand-up comedy.

This single voice helps tell a deep story.

There are many ways to use a monologue. An interior monologue lets us hear a character's inner thoughts. This makes their private feelings visible to the audience. A dramatic monologue happens when one character speaks to another. Some monologues are active. This means the speaker wants to reach a specific goal. Other monologues are narrative. In these, the character simply tells a story. You can often tell they are narrative because they use the past tense.

Monologues have a very long history. They began in ancient Greek theatre. Long ago, a single actor might appear with a chorus. This shows that monologues came before dialogue. Dialogue is when two or more people talk. Ancient Roman theatre used monologues even more often. They used them to show that a lot of time had passed. These were called linking monologues.

There were also entrance and exit monologues to show time passing.

Different eras changed how people used these speeches. During the Renaissance, characters used long speeches to reach a goal. This is part of their dramatic need. Later, postmodern theatre changed things again. These modern plays sometimes blur the lines of acting. They might use speeches that feel like real life stories.

This makes the performance feel very personal to the viewer.

Actors use monologues to show their great skills. They often perform them during auditions. An audition is a test for a new role. These speeches are usually short, often two minutes or less.

Actors might perform two different kinds. They might do one funny monologue and one sad one. They might also mix classical and contemporary styles. This helps directors see how well the actor can perform different parts.
