A viral disease happens when tiny germs enter a body.

These germs are called virions. They attach to cells and go inside them. This can make a person feel sick.

Many different types of viruses exist. Some are very small. Others are slightly larger. Most viruses belong to a family. Viruses in the same family often share similar shapes. Some viruses have a thin outer layer called an envelope. Others do not have this layer.

Viruses work in different ways inside our cells. Most DNA viruses make copies of themselves in the cell nucleus. The nucleus is the center part of a cell. Most RNA viruses make copies in the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is the fluid inside the cell. There are some exceptions to these rules.

Common illnesses come from many viruses. The common cold and the flu are examples. Some viruses cause stomach pain. Others can come from an animal bite. This is called rabies. We can stay healthy by washing our hands. We can also cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze.
