Patent office

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A patent office is a group run by a government.

Its job is to manage patents. A patent is a special right for an idea. People send an application to the office. This is a form that asks for details. The office looks at the application carefully. They check if it meets certain rules. These rules are for patentability. This means the idea must be right for a patent. If the idea meets the rules, the office may grant it. If it does not, they may reject it.

Many different places have their own offices. Some work for just one country. Others work for many lands at once. We call these regional or international offices. For example, the European Patent Office works for many places. The World Intellectual Property Organization helps keep a list of these offices. There are many offices in places like Japan, China, and Canada. They help people protect their new ideas.
