It can be a brand new thing. It can also make an old thing better.

An inventor finds or makes these new things.

Some people get a patent for their work. A patent is a legal paper. It gives the owner rights for a set time. This lets them stop others from selling the idea. It can also help them earn money.

Inventors use many ways to find ideas. They might draw on paper or use a computer. They can also use trial and error. This means trying something, seeing if it works, and then fixing it. Some ideas come by accident. For example, the material Teflon was an accident.

Inventions can be many kinds. Some are machines like the smartphone. Others are ways of acting, like the Olympic Games. Even numbers can be inventions.

Some inventions, like the parachute, become more useful as time goes on.
