Creativity is the ability to make new and useful ideas.

You can use your imagination to do this. Some creative things are physical objects. You might make a painting or a new meal. Other things are not objects you can touch. These are called intangible products. Examples include jokes, music, or new scientific theories.

Creativity also helps people solve problems. It lets you find new ways to reach a goal. In the past, people saw things differently. Ancient Greeks and Indians saw art as a discovery. They did not think people made it. Later, many believed only God could create. The modern idea of human creativity grew during the Renaissance. This was a time when people valued human skill.

Some experts study how creativity works. One man named Graham Wallas shared a model. He said it has five steps. First, you do work to focus on a problem. This is called preparation. Next, your mind works on it while you rest. This step is called incubation. Then, you get a feeling a solution is near. This is called intimation. Next, the idea pops into your mind. This is called illumination. Finally, you check the idea to see if it works. This last step is called verification.
