Creativity is the ability to make new and useful ideas or works. You can use your imagination to do this.

Some creative things are physical objects. You might make a painting, a meal, or a piece of jewelry. Other things are not objects you can touch. These are called intangible products. Examples include jokes, music, or new scientific theories. Creativity also helps people solve problems. It lets you find new ways to reach a goal.

How does the creative process work? One man named Graham Wallas shared a model in 1926. He said it has five steps. First, you do work to focus on a problem. This is called preparation. Next, your mind works on it while you rest. This step is called incubation. Then, you get a feeling a solution is near. This is called intimation. Next, the idea pops into your mind. This is called illumination. Finally, you check the idea to see if it works. This last step is called verification.

People have thought about creativity differently throughout history.

Most ancient cultures lacked the modern concept. Ancient Greece, China, and India saw art as a discovery. Plato believed a painter merely imitates what they see. Later, many believed only God could create. In the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition, humans were just expressing God's work. The modern view changed during the Renaissance. This was a time that valued human intellect and achievement.

Many experts study creativity today.

Psychologists and business experts look at how it works. In 1950, J.P. Guilford gave a famous speech. He helped people study creativity as a special part of the mind. He showed it was different from IQ. In 1927, Alfred North Whitehead used the word "creativity" in his lectures. He used it to describe a very large category of ideas. Researchers now look at it in many different fields.

Creativity connects to many parts of our lives. It can help people cope with hard feelings like hate or despair. It can even help people work better together in a group. Different cultures see it in different ways too. In Hong Kong, research shows people view creativity through social influence. This means they look at what a person contributes to society. In some African languages, there is no direct word for creativity. This shows how our language shapes how we think about the world.
