Medical humanities

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Medical humanities is a special field that connects medicine to many other subjects. It is not just about biology or science. Instead, it uses the arts and social sciences to understand health. This field looks at the things people feel during illness. These experiences are often hidden or invisible to others. By studying these feelings, we learn more about being human.

This field works by bringing different ideas together. It uses things like history, philosophy, and religion to answer big questions. For example, the arts can offer a new way to see science. Some people use a method called critical medical humanities. This approach uses art to look at how healthcare works. It helps people think about culture and human behavior. Another way is called translational medical humanities. This way uses ideas from the arts to make healthcare better.

There is a long history of using these ideas in schools. In 1972, a medical school did something very new. The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine-Hershey started a program. They hired an English professor named Joanne Trautmann to teach literature. This was the first time literature was part of a medical curriculum. Since then, many universities have offered these important courses. They help students learn to be professional and respectful.

There are many important parts to this study. One part is bioethics, which looks at morals in healthcare. It helps people debate new things, like changing how a body looks with technology. Another part is clinical ethics. This focuses on how doctors show respect to patients and families. It also looks at bias, which is an unfair way of thinking. For example, people should not judge if a person with a disability can be successful.

Many students study literature and medicine to help their work. They read stories written by patients about their own lives. This helps doctors in training understand how patients feel. It also helps them notice their own assumptions. Reading these stories builds empathy, which is understanding how others feel. This creates a stronger bond between a doctor and a patient. It makes the relationship much more meaningful for everyone.
