Have you ever wondered why a story stays in your mind? People study these feelings through literary criticism. This is the study and evaluation of books and stories. Critics look closely at how literature is made. They try to find deep meanings in the words. Some people use literary theory to help them. Theory is a way to study the goals of writing. It is a way to think about how books work.

Some critics focus only on the words on the page. They do not talk about the author's life. This way of thinking is called New Criticism. It helps readers focus on the text itself. This work is a very important part of culture.

This way of looking at books is very old. In the 4th century BC, Aristotle wrote a book called Poetics. He explained how different kinds of art work. He used ideas like mimesis and catharsis. These ideas are still used in studies today. Later, people used these tools to study religious texts. This happened in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. In the 9th century, writers like Al-Jahiz studied Arabic poetry. They used special methods to understand these works.

During the Renaissance, people found old Greek texts again. In 1498, Giorgio Valla translated Aristotle's Poetics into Latin. This helped people see literature as central to culture. In 1570, Lodovico Castelvetro wrote about these same ideas. Later, the Baroque period brought new ways of thinking. It favored things that were extreme or surprising. In 1654, Emanuele Tesauro wrote about the power of metaphors. He showed how images can help us find truth. These different eras changed how we value writing.

In the 1700s, literary criticism became very popular. More people were learning how to read back then. Reading was no longer just for the very wealthy. Books became a way for people to have fun. This is called the Enlightenment period. Because of printing, many reviews appeared in newspapers. Samuel Johnson was a very famous critic during this time. Some critics even looked at an author's religious beliefs. They wanted to see if books were good for society.

Today, the world of criticism is huge. Some people look at how books connect to nature. This is called ecocriticism. Others study movies or even comic books. Some researchers look at how books were actually made. This is called the history of the book. They study things like printing and copyright laws. You can find critics in many different places. They write in journals or in famous magazines. They help us understand the stories that shape our world.
