You might look at the way words sound or how they move. You can study the meter, which is the rhythm of the words. You might also look at metaphors or other ways writers use language. Some people use poetics to describe how things are made. Others use it to say how things should be made. It is a way to explore the very act of creation.

The roots of Western poetics began in Ancient Greece. The word comes from the Greek word "poietikos." This word means something that is creative or productive. It comes from "poiesis," which means bringing something into being. This refers to making something that did not exist before. Early thinkers like Homer and Hesiod wrote about these ideas. Later, a lyricist named Pindar also wrote about poetic theory.

Plato was one of the first to write about this in his work, *The Republic*. He thought poetry could be deceptive or even dangerous. Aristotle wrote a very important book called *Poetics*.

He categorized Greek drama into comedy, tragedy, and satyr plays. He also separated drama, lyric poetry, and epic poems. His work was lost to the West for a long time. It returned through an Arabic commentary by Averroes in 1256. Later, William of Moerbeke made a Greek-Latin translation in 1278.

Modern poetics grew much during the Renaissance in Italy.

In the Romantic era, poetics focused more on how a person feels. Today, poetics helps us study the many ways writers use tools. It connects the old ideas of the past to our modern stories.
