It looks at the way stories and poems are built. The word comes from an ancient Greek word. That word means "to make." It describes the act of bringing something new into being.

Long ago, a thinker named Plato wrote about poetry. He thought poetry could be tricky or even dangerous. Later, Aristotle wrote a famous book called *Poetics*.

He studied different kinds of plays. He looked at comedy and tragedy. He also studied epic poems. Aristotle believed people have a natural urge to imitate things. He thought this was the heart of all poetry.

Many people studied these ideas in Italy later on. They wanted to understand old texts in new ways. They learned about metaphors, which are ways to use words to mean other things. Today, poetics helps us see how writers use tools to make an effect. It is a way to study the craft of making art.
