A genre is a way to sort stories and poems. People sort them by length or mood. They also use the style of writing. Some writing is called prose. Prose is writing like in a story. Other writing is called poetry.

Genres can have smaller groups inside them. These are called subgenres. For example, a novel is a large genre. A detective novel is a smaller group inside it. You can even have a "hard-boiled" detective story. That is a tiny group inside the detective group.

Long ago, a man named Aristotle studied these groups. He looked at poetry and speech. He saw types like comedy and tragedy. Later, people in the Romantic period had new ideas. They felt some books should be unique. They wanted to escape from real life. In 1957, a scholar named Northrop Frye made a new system. He grouped stories by how heroes act. He also looked at who the stories were for. Some were meant to be sung. Others were meant to be read or acted.
