Prose poetry

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Prose poetry is a special way to write. Most poems use short lines. Prose poems do not use these lines. Instead, they look like regular stories. They use prose, which is normal writing. But they still use tools from poetry. These tools include rhyme and rhythm. They also use metaphors, which are ways to compare things.

This book is a famous early example. Writing this way gives authors more freedom. They do not have to follow many strict rules. Because of this, it can be hard to define. Some writers have many different ideas about it.

Many people have used this form. In Japan, Matsuo Bashō used a style called haibun. This mixed prose with haiku poems. In France, writers like Aloysius Bertrand used it. Later, Charles Baudelaire also wrote in this style. In Poland, Bolesław Prus wrote tiny poetic stories. Even the Bible uses prose with poetic rhythms. Many famous writers like Walt Whitman used it too. Today, many people still love prose poetry. Some magazines even focus only on these short pieces.
