Verse (poetry)

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Verse is a special way to write. People often call it poetry.

A verse can be one single line. It can also mean a group of lines. These groups of lines are called stanzas.

There are many ways to write verse. One way is called rhymed verse. This type uses a steady beat. It also uses words that sound the same at the end. This is called rhyme.

Another way is blank verse. This type has a steady beat. But it does not use rhyme. Many writers use a pattern called iambic pentameter.

A third way is free verse. This type has no fixed beat. It also does not usually have rhyme. It can feel very loose.

Some people use the word verse to mean prose. Prose is regular writing like sentences or paragraphs. People use prose to tell stories or share facts. Verse is different because it uses rhythm. It is a way to play with words. Writing verse lets people share their ideas in new ways.
