Rhyme

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A rhyme is a pattern of sounds. It happens when words end with similar sounds. Most people use rhymes in songs or poems. This can make the words sound like music. Rhyme is also a great way to help us remember things. It helps us hear where a line in a poem ends.

There are many kinds of rhymes. A perfect rhyme has sounds that match exactly. For example, the words sight and flight are perfect rhymes. Some rhymes are not perfect. These are called near rhymes. They only sound a little bit alike. You can also find rhymes in the middle of a line. This is called an internal rhyme.

People have used rhyme for a very long time. The oldest evidence comes from the Shi Jing in China. Rhyme is also very important in Arabic poetry. In the 7th century, Irish poets used rhyme with great skill. Some rhymes even use the same spelling but sound different. These are called eye rhymes. They can be tricky to read aloud!
