Most songs have verses and choruses. A person who writes these words is a lyricist. In long shows like an opera, the words have a special name. They are called a libretto. The writer of a libretto is a librettist.

The word lyric comes from a Greek word. It meant poetry sung with a lyre. A lyre is a small instrument with strings.

Lyrics can be very different. Some lyrics tell a clear story. Other lyrics are abstract. This means they are hard to understand. They might focus more on the sound and rhythm. In rap songs, people do not sing. They speak the words to a beat. Some lyrics use "shifters." These are words like "I" or "you." The meaning of these words changes based on who is speaking. People study lyrics in school. They look for messages about life or politics. A study of many songs showed a change in lyrics over fifty years. It found more words about stress and fewer happy words.
