Lyrics are the words that make up a song.

Most songs use a pattern of verses and choruses. A person who writes these words is called a lyricist. In very long musical works like an opera, the words have a different name. They are called a libretto, which means "little book." The person who writes these is a librettist.

Lyrics can be very clear or very mysterious. Some lyrics are abstract, which means they are hard to understand. These words might focus on the rhythm and the way the sounds fit together. In rap and grime music, the lyrics are often spoken rhythmically instead of being sung.

There are many ways to use lyrics in music. Some songs use "shifters," which are words like "I," "you," "my," or "our." The meaning of these words changes depending on who is singing. Lyrics can also be part of many different styles. These include anthems, ballads, blues, carols, and folk songs. You might also hear them in lullabies, marches, or spirituals. Sometimes, the words come first and the music is added later. A famous example is the hymn "Jerusalem," which used words from a poem. Other times, the music is written first, and the words follow.

The history of the word "lyric" goes back to ancient Greece. It comes from a Greek word for the lyre, which is a stringed instrument. In those days, lyric poetry was defined by being sung with a lyre or a cithara. This was different from other types of poems that were chanted or played with a flute. The word first appeared in the English language in the mid-16th century. It was used to talk about the poems of the Earl of Surrey. Later, in 1876, a dictionary used the word to mean poetry meant to be sung. By the 1950s, using the plural word "lyrics" became the standard way to speak.

People study lyrics in a very serious way in schools. They look at lyrics to find messages about politics or society. These messages can be easy to see or hidden behind symbols. Some experts even study how the words fit with the music. A famous professor named Christopher Ricks studied the lyrics of Bob Dylan. He looked at the poetry within the songs. A study from 2025 looked at over 20,000 songs from the US Top 100 charts. It found that lyrics have changed over fifty years. These songs showed more words about stress and fewer happy words.

Finding lyrics online can sometimes be a hard job for companies. Some websites show lyrics without asking the owners for permission. This can lead to legal problems over copyright. The U.S. Music Publishers Association even started a campaign about this in 2005. Some companies, like LyricFind and Musixmatch, help by providing licensed lyrics. You can also find lyrics through search engines like Google. Since late 2014, Google has shown lyrics directly in its search results. This makes it easy for people to read the words while they listen.
