People use these songs to show love to a deity or a great person. The word comes from the Greek word "hymnos," which means a song of praise. When people write these songs, they are called hymndists. The act of writing or singing them is known as hymnody. Many people keep these songs in books called hymnals or hymn books.

These songs help people feel connected to their faith and to each other.

There are many ways to perform a hymn. Some people sing them alone in private prayer. Others sing them together in a large group during worship.

Many hymns use instruments to help the singers. In the past, people used harps, lyres, or lutes. In many Western churches, a large organ leads the singing. Some modern groups even use electric guitars and drum kits. However, some groups prefer to sing a cappella. This means they use only their voices with no instruments at all.

Hymns have a very long and rich history. They exist in many different cultures around the world.

In ancient times, people in Egypt and Greece wrote hymns. The Sumerian Kesh temple hymn is one of the oldest literary texts in the world. In India, the Rigveda is a famous collection of Vedic hymns. The Bible also contains the Book of Psalms, which is a collection of sacred songs. These ancient traditions show how much people have always valued musical praise.

Different religions have their own special ways of using hymns. In Christianity, hymns are often used to celebrate holy days like Christmas or Easter. Some hymns are even used to thank God for special blessings. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, singers often use a drone or a single instrument called an ison. The Coptic tradition uses cymbals and a triangle to add rhythm. In India, people use hymns called stotras. Each culture uses its own unique sounds to express its deep beliefs.

Hymns connect the past to the way people live today. Even during difficult times, people have used hymns to find strength. For example, the Bible tells of Paul and Silas singing in a jail. During the Protestant Reformation, leaders like Martin Luther wrote famous hymns. One of his most well-known songs is "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." Today, new writers continue to create hymns that feel both old and new. This keeps the tradition of hymnody alive for everyone to enjoy.
