People sing them during Christmas or the days around it. Sometimes these songs are called "noels," which is a word used for carols from France. Many people love carols because they bring people together. They can be sung by one person or a large group.

Some carols are religious, while others are just about the season. Even songs that do not have religious words are often called carols. They help people celebrate traditions and feel a sense of joy.

There are many ways to perform these songs.

Some people sing in big choirs at church services. In some places, groups called wassailers used to travel from house to house. In countries like Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria, singers still visit homes. They might sing for gifts, money, or even a snack like a mince pie. Today, some students even use phones to sing for people. This is a modern way to share a tradition called "Dial-A-Carol."

The history of carols goes back a very long time. Some of the first hymns were written in Rome during the 4th century. A Spanish poet named Prudentius wrote a song in the year 413.

In the 900s and 1000s, monks in Northern Europe began writing rhymed stanzas. By the 1200s, people in France, Germany, and Italy were writing songs in their own local languages. Many carols were once communal songs for harvest festivals. Only later did people start using them specifically for the Christmas season.

Many famous carols we know today were saved in old books.

One book called "Piae Cantiones" was published in 1582 and included Latin songs. In 1818, the famous song "Silent Night" was first performed in Austria. A man named Joseph Mohr wrote the words, and Franz Gruber wrote the music. In 1833, William Sandys published a book with songs like "Good King Wenceslas." Later, in 1928, "The Oxford Book of Carols" became a very popular way for choirs to find music. These books helped make carols a part of life for many people.

Carols can tell many different stories through their lyrics. Some songs describe the birth of Jesus and the Star of Bethlehem. Other songs tell about the Three Kings or the shepherds.

Some carols do not focus on the birth at all. For example, "Good King Wenceslas" is based on a legend about a saint. Some songs even describe the sound of ringing church bells. Carols connect us to the past through these many different tales. They allow us to hear the same stories that people heard hundreds of years ago.
