Anthem

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

An anthem is a special kind of music made for celebration. It often acts as a symbol for a specific group of people. You might know them as national anthems for different countries. These songs help people feel proud of their history and traditions.

Some anthems are even used for flags during special ceremonies. In sports, fans use catchy pop songs as anthems to cheer. Even big companies sometimes write anthems to motivate their workers.

Musical anthems can work in many different ways. Some are written for a large, trained choir to sing. These pieces might use solo singers or the whole group together. Unlike a normal song, an anthem often does not repeat its melody. It might change its beat or rhythm several times from start to finish. This makes the music feel very different as it moves along.

Long ago, anthems were mostly used in English-speaking churches. They were a type of religious music used during morning or evening prayer. They replaced older songs that were sung in Latin. In the 1500s, famous composers like Thomas Tallis wrote important anthems. By the 1600s, musicians like Henry Purcell made them very popular.

Many different styles of anthems exist around the world today. National anthems in Europe or Latin America can sound like grand operas. In Africa or the Caribbean, they might use a simple fanfare. Some anthems are even shared by different nations. For example, the folk song "Arirang" is a shared anthem for North and South Korea.

It was even played when they marched together in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Anthems connect us to the things we value most. They can celebrate a country, a religion, or a sports team. Some melodies are so famous they are used by many different nations. The song for Estonia uses the same melody as the song for Finland. Whether it is a grand hymn or a pop song, an anthem brings people together. They turn a simple melody into a shared feeling of belonging.
