Anthem

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

An anthem is a special song for a group. It is often used to celebrate. Many people know national anthems. These songs represent a whole country. They tell the history and traditions of the people. Most national anthems sound like marches or hymns. Some parts of the world use grand, operatic styles. Other places use a simple fanfare.

Anthems can also be for a flag. People might sing a flag anthem during a ceremony. Some countries use a separate song just for their flag. In sports, fans use anthems to cheer. Famous pop songs often act as sports anthems.

Some anthems are shared. A song might be used by many different nations. For example, the song "Arirang" is a folk song for North and South Korea. It was played when they marched together in the 2018 Olympics.

In the past, anthems were mostly for churches. They were written for trained choirs to sing. These songs often use words from holy books. They can be very long or change their beat many times. An anthem is a powerful way to bring people together.
