A national anthem is a special song for a country.

It stands for a nation's history and its traditions. Most anthems sound like a march or a hymn. People sing them to show pride and love for their home.

You might hear an anthem at a big sports game. The Olympic Games play the anthem of the gold medal winner. This helps people feel part of a group.

Some anthems are very old. The song for Japan uses a poem from long ago. The song for the Netherlands has music from the 1500s. Other songs are newer. When a country becomes free, it often picks a new song. Kenya even had a special group to make its anthem.

Anthems are used in many ways. Some schools play them every day. In Colombia, it is the law to play the anthem on the radio. Some people see the song as a way to honor soldiers. Others see it as a way to honor the land.

Even when two sides fight, they might use a shared folk song to stay together.
