A national anthem is a special musical composition for a country. It serves as a symbol for a nation's history and traditions. Most anthems are written in the style of a march or a hymn.

These songs help people feel a sense of pride or togetherness. People often use them to honor their homeland. Some countries even have different songs for their specific states.

In the United Kingdom, there are different official songs for its parts. This shows how music can represent many different groups at once.

There are many ways that people use these songs today. You will often hear them at big international sporting events. Since 1920, the Olympic Games have played the anthem of the gold medal winner.

In some places, like Tanzania, schools play anthems to practice patriotism. Other nations have specific laws for playing them. In Colombia, the law says the anthem must play on public radio and TV at 6:00 and 18:00. In Thailand, the anthem plays at 08:00 and 18:00. Even in cinemas, an anthem might play before a movie starts.

Anthems have very long and interesting histories. Some songs are much older than the countries that use them now. The Dutch anthem, the Wilhelmus, has lyrics from the 1500s. However, it was not officially adopted until 1932. The Japanese anthem, Kimigayo, uses a poem from the Heian period. This period lasted from 794 to 1185. Yet, the music for Kimigayo was not set until 1880. France was the first country to have an official anthem by decree in 1795.

Many famous anthems were created by people we might not know. The tune for the U.S. anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, came from a song called The Anacreontic Song.

Some anthems were written by very famous composers. Joseph Haydn wrote the melody for the German anthem. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is sometimes credited with the Austrian anthem. A few anthems were written by Nobel Prize winners. Rabindranath Tagore wrote the words for the anthems of both India and Bangladesh. He is the only person to write anthems for two different nations.

Sometimes, music helps people find a way to be together. During the 2018 Winter Olympics, North and South Korea joined as one team. They did not use their own national anthems. Instead, they played a folk song called "Arirang." This song is beloved by people on both sides of the border. It acted as a symbol for Korea as a whole. This shows how music can bridge gaps between people. It can turn a song into a way to find peace.
